Bethany Beach Residence
Designed for a remarkably narrow 17-foot-wide oceanfront lot, this custom single-family residence redefines what is possible on constrained coastal sites. The challenge of the site—long, narrow, and directly exposed to the ocean—became the driving force behind a highly considered architectural response focused on light, views, and spatial clarity. From the outset, the clients’ vision was clear: every space in the home should engage the ocean, while providing a thoughtful separation between family living and guest accommodations.
After exploring numerous iterations, the home was conceived as an extruded A-frame–inspired volume, strategically carved to introduce a central void. This subtraction divided the structure into two distinct forms—the primary beach house and a separate guest house—while creating a protected outdoor room between them. The resulting pool deck serves as the heart of the home, connecting indoor and outdoor living while maintaining privacy and uninterrupted ocean views from both structures.
The main house, positioned closest to the shoreline, anchors the property and contains the primary living spaces, including a chef’s kitchen and open living area oriented directly toward the ocean. The guest house, set to the rear, provides dedicated accommodations for family and friends without sacrificing views or connection to the water. Across both buildings, wall-to-wall glazing, cathedral-height windows, and carefully placed openings along the north and south elevations allow natural light to flood the interiors, reinforcing a sense of openness uncommon on lots of this scale.
At 4,332 square feet, with six bedrooms, six full baths, and one half bath, the home demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can transform constraint into opportunity. This award-winning residence stands as an example of how rigorous design can elevate even the most challenging conditions into a truly unique and enduring coastal home.
